September is National Food Safety Education Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about safe practices that prevent foodborne illness. But the story of food safety can be found before the science and regulations in the historic changes in the relationship between the land, the economy, society, and the federal government during the first half of the 20th century.

In this compelling lecture, food policy expert Dr. Darin Detwiler examines the modernization of farming, including the transformation of the land, population migration, irrigation projects, government taking of farmland for national defense purposes, and other forms of federal government involvement in food (such as feeding of troops, promoting local “Victory Gardens,” and other solutions to wartime challenges.)
