Silent Enemies - The Whole Story

Imagine being under pressure. Not the kind that comes with deadlines or crowded schedules, but the kind that comes from living hundreds of feet underwater inside a metal tube where the outside world is pitch black and the threats you worry about are often the ones you can’t see. Down there, awareness isn’t optional. Vigilance isn’t heroic. It’s survival.

Throughout the fall of 2025, New Food magazine published the 4 part series titled Silent Enemies (along with an additional authors note and behind the scenes interview) where Darin talks about the eerie parallels between life on a nuclear submarine and the hidden dangers that still shape our food system today.
Each installment adds another layer, another connection, another moment that makes you rethink what “invisible risk” really means. If you want to go even deeper, the companion podcast episode opens the door to the stories behind the stories, the pieces that didn’t make it to print, and the reflections that only surface when you speak them out loud.
Read the series for the full journey, then listen to Episode 5 of Confessions of a Food Safety A**hole to feel the weight, the stakes, and the humanity behind it. It's part memoir, part moral map, and a reflection on what it means to act before the invisible becomes irreversible.
