September is National Food Safety Education Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about safe practices that prevent foodborne illness. Food safety isn't just about what happens in the kitchen. It's shaped by decisions that take place in state and federal legislative buildings as well.

In this insightful interview, food policy expert Dr. Darin Detwiler speaks with Dr. Chris Bosso (Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at Northeastern University) about the problems addressed in the food space – particularly food systems and resiliency in urban spaces. We talk about food deserts and food jungles as well as challenged due to climate change.

Elements of the food system discussed include industrialization, Mechanizations and Monocultures, standardized commodities, concentrating of industries, global / seasonal demands, efficiency, connectedness, as well as specific examples using maps of Boston.
