September is National Food Safety Education Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about safe practices that prevent foodborne illness.  Practices and policies – especially those at the global level – often overlap with other policies, including SDGs and food sustainability to name a few.

In this eye-opening interview, Dr. Darin Detwiler speaks with Vincent Doumeizel (via Zoom from Edinburgh, Scotland) then the VP of Food and Sustainability for Lloyd’s Register – now Senior Advisor - Ocean & Food at United Nations Global Compact.

This discussion explores how the convergence of life sciences and data technology is transforming food sustainability - from DNA tagging and microbiome insights to blockchain and real-time monitoring. Doumeizel emphasizes that lasting impact requires more than tech: behavioral change, innovative packaging, and smarter use of resources like the ocean are all essential. Companies with long-term, purpose-driven strategies are leading the way toward safer, more sustainable food systems.
