What is advocacy to PEP Nexus

When looking at any issue in our world today, there are four lenses by which you can view it: awareness, allies, advocacy, and activism. Not everyone can embrace all of them but everyone can embody at least one of them. Some might decide that they wish to work within existing systems and structures to promote and implement changes, often through education, policy influence, and collaboration.

PEP Nexus considers an advocate as a person who actively promotes and champions the cause of food safety, often working to raise awareness, influence policy, and drive improvements within the industry. Advocates play a crucial role in highlighting issues, educating the public, and pushing for higher standards and better practices to ensure the safety and quality of food.

Important advocates in this field include food safety experts and authors like:

  • Dr. Darin Detwiler (pictured above), a prominent advocate for food safety, renowned for his tireless efforts to enhance food safety standards and policies. His advocacy work includes speaking engagements, media contributions, and participation in regulatory discussions, all aimed at strengthening food safety systems and protecting consumers from foodborne illnesses.

  • Marion Nestle, a distinguished advocate for food safety, celebrated for her influential work in nutrition, food policy, and public health. Her advocacy focuses on the intersections of food marketing, government regulation, and consumer rights, often highlighting how industry practices and policies can compromise food safety.

  • Bill Marler, a prominent foodborne illness attorney, has been a vocal advocate for food safety reforms. He has represented numerous victims of foodborne illnesses, seeking justice and compensation for those affected. His legal expertise and advocacy have significantly influenced food industry practices and regulatory frameworks.

These individuals, and so many more, leverage their expertise and platforms to effect change and protect public health.
