September is National Food Safety Education Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about safe practices that prevent foodborne illness. Key to food safety and public health messaging is the role of journalism – a field that has experienced radical change over the past few decades.
What happens when two professors from completely different fields join forces to discuss the overlap of their area of expertise? In this ‘tag-team’ video lecture, food safety expert and Northeastern University professor Dr. Darin Detwiler is joined by Associate Professor of Communication Dustin Harp, Ph.D., of The University of Texas at Arlington who focuses on areas of journalism, digital media (social networks, blogging, Second Life, YouTube), gender, and social movements and the public sphere. We discuss food safety as it overlaps with national vs. state / local coverage of events, journalism influences, how to research, and impact on audience / public.
