September is National Food Safety Education Month

Purpose of Food Safety Education Month

September marks National Food Safety Education Month, a month dedicated to raising awareness for the importance of food safety. With approximately 48 million cases of foodborne illness occurring annually in the U.S., this month aims to educate the public on how to prevent these illnesses. Simple practices such as proper handwashing, avoiding cross-contamination, cooking foods to the correct temperature, and proper food storage can significantly reduce the risk of foodborne diseases.

PEP Nexus is a global media company dedicated to bring awareness to food safety issues and connect information with the intent to Protect Every Plate. Over the course of this month we will post resources, information, and personal accounts of what food safety education month means across the industry.

FDA's resources supporting National Food Safety Education Month

For our first post regarding Food Safety Education we turn your attention to the Food and Drug Administrations resources dedicated to supporting ensuring you are handling food safely and properly. On the page (linked below) you will find links to their social media toolkit to share messages and tips about food safety, a quiz to test your food safety knowledge, education materials, community engagement and information about their priorities in the New Era of Smarter Food Safety.

We encourage you to review these resources and re-post any of the information that might inspire you to bring awareness to something you may previously have been unaware. They recommend using #NFSEM to help spread the word about the importance of food safety.

Why It Matters

Food safety is a shared responsibility that involves everyone from food producers to consumers. By practicing safe food handling and preparation, we can protect ourselves and our families from harmful bacteria and viruses that cause foodborne illnesses. This collective effort not only improves public health but also builds trust in our food systems.
