The NPR show “1A” will be airing a live program on the amount of food recalls we've seen recently - eggs, cantaloupes, and apple juice, coming after the Boar's Head listeria outbreak. It's a live panel discussion on Tuesday, 9/17 7-8 am PST (10-11am EST).
Dr. Darin Detwiler, Founder and CEO of Detwiler Consulting Group, is a renowned food safety academic, advisor, advocate, and author. His “Iconic” career in food safety, spanning over 30 years, has significantly influenced industry leadership and food safety policies through roles and collaborations with the USDA, FDA, NEHA, and NGOs. He is a Professor at Northeastern University, whose books include Food Safety: Past, Present, and Predictions, and Building the Future of Food Safety Technology.
Darin will be joined by two other icons in the world of food safety
Sarah Sorscher: Director of Regulatory Affairs at the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) - a non-profit health-advocacy group that focuses on nutrition and food safety, and
Bill Marler: Lawyer and Owner of Marler Clark Inc, PS - the leading expert in food safety law having represented thousands of victims over the past 30 years in food safety cases against large corporations.
All three appear in the Emme-nominated 2023 Netflix documentary “Poisoned: The Dirty Truth about Your Food.”
During the podcast they will be talking about the latest recalls and what we're learning from the Boar's Head inspection reports, about food safety processes and what consumers need to know. Darin will also focus on how freedom of speech is critical in his efforts to protect every plate.
Launched in 2017, “1A” is a program inspired by the First Amendment. “The five freedoms, as set out in the Constitution, are the rules of the road. The First Amendment protects free speech and a free press. It allows 1A to explore the most important issues facing the country.” 1A’s goal is to act as a national mirror, taking time to help America look at itself and to ask what it wants to be. 1A looks at both what divides and connects us, and they cover more than just the news.
This show is live from 7am – 8am PST (10 am – 11 am EST). The program is produced by WA MU 88.5 | American University Radio and distributed by NPR.
