September is National Food Safety Education Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about safe practices that prevent foodborne illness. But the story of food safety demands that we look at the people and organizations behind the scenes who work to include multiple perspectives on emerging issues.
In this video, food policy expert Dr. Darin Detwiler sits down with Dr. David McSwane, Executive Director of the Conference for Food Protection (CFP). Since 1971, CFP has united government, industry, academia, and consumers to collaboratively address emerging food safety challenges. Through open dialogue and science-based recommendations, CFP has helped shape the FDA Model Food Code—a foundational guide that informs food safety practices nationwide.
Dr. Detwiler’s conversation with Dr. McSwane highlights the complex ecosystem of food safety: where policy, regulation, communication, geography, and consumer advocacy must align to protect public health.
Critical to food safety is the balance between solutions, laws, policies, regulatory agencies, geography, industry communication, consumers, and communities. The diversity of the members, the variety of the committees, as well as the frequency of meetings support the success of the CSP work.
