A conversation with Bryan Armentrout

This month, alongside our PEP Talks and various posts, we're excited to welcome input from special guests. These food safety heroes share their thoughts on the significance of food safety education. To kick off the first week, we’re joined by Bryan Armentrout, host of The Food Safety Chat – Live! podcast. Bryan regularly engages with QA and Food Safety professionals from FDA-regulated food companies, bringing in experts to discuss specific topics every Friday at 10 am ET via live stream on LinkedIn and YouTube and everyone is welcome to join the conversation.

At PEP Nexus, we focus on what we call the 4 A's: awareness, allies, advocacy, and activism. We believe these are the key areas where meaningful change happens. We asked Bryan to share his thoughts on these four areas and their importance in food safety education. Here’s what he had to say:

PEP Nexus: What are topics that you want to bring awareness to? Why is this important?

Bryan Armentrout: I want to bring awareness to the many activities food safety professionals perform to bring wholesome food to the tables of the world. “If you do your job well in food safety, nobody notices. I do.”

P.N.: Who are allies that would benefit from your broadcast (and why)?

B.A.: The livestream speaks to allies and importantly, how to bring them to the table. People who work in technical fields must develop the skills to persuade outside of our professional bubble to succeed.

P.N.: What successes or support for your advocacy do you want to celebrate?

B.A.: What is great about this field is that we are not working in a competitive space. We all benefit from safe food. It is in the interest of everyone in the supply chain and consumers to celebrate and advocate for safe food. It’s a requirement of life.

P.N.: How would you define activism related to your focus?

B.A.: We are activists in the sense that we influence. We know those who can focus on activism and the message, such as Darin Detwiler and Bill Marler. When they appear on my show, I support their efforts and activism.
